VMA’s Fashion: From Hell Yes to W.T.F.

Besides the fact that I find it odd that this award show still exists (music videos? they still make those?), I still find myself tuning in every year to watch the performances and see what crazy ensembles the celeb’s come up with. Yesterday was no exception and so I sat down in front of the TV with the hubby and the puppy to be entertained. I believe it was Katy Perry’s hideous all denim get-up that inspired me to write this post today. I mean, I love me some Katy and I think she is gorge, but that dress was horrible. And then to make it worse, her date (or whatever he was – because I refuse to believe she went from John Mayer to THAT), was also in head-to-toe denim! It reminded me of the Britney and JT denim debacle back in 2001. I think that might have been what they were going for, but still. Ew.

Fall Fuego - 2014 Trends

I’ve never been one to live and die by the current seasons fashion trends, but I do always find it interesting to see what designers have deemed the next “in thing.” This upcoming Fall season boasts lots of pastels, velvet, bold prints and a gothic edge. Please for all things holy do not incorporate all of these into one outfit – that would be absolutely horrendous!   

Pastels are no longer reserved for the Spring and Summer months? This is probably one of the most surprising looks of the season for me. I just can’t see how looking like an Easter egg is going to work with the dark cooler months, but if designers like Armani are backing it, I’m willing to give it a go! To help ease me into to this transition, I’ve paired a pastel orange sweater with a navy skirt. At least orange is a fally color and the skirt brings some darkness to the look.

I’ve never been a fan of velvet – not since my little sister and I were forced to dress up in matching green velvet dresses for Christmas, when I was a kid. Do you have any idea how uncool this is to a twelve year old? Traumatizing. Since I can’t don a full-on velvet ensemble without a nervous twitch, I’ve decided to go with slight touches of it instead.  This kimono is probably my fave thing on this list; it’s dark, it’s moody and it screams Fall to me. I think I may just have to buy it! Only the floral details are velvet and I think it would look hot with a black tank, some dark wash skinny jeans and a pair of sky-high black velvet booties.

Bold prints have kind of been in for a while now, so it’s no surprise they are making an appearance in the cooler months. I am obsessed with this little bird dress; it is so fun! It can be dressed up with some black stockings and black heels or dressed down with some dark brown leather slouchy boots. It also ties in another Fall trend that didn’t make my list – animal imagery.

Last up are pieces with a gothic flair. Leave your white face powder and black lipstick at home ladies, we aren’t quite going that far, but some dark edgy pieces can easily be incorporated into any closet. This sweater mini dress is to die for! The detail at the bottom almost gives it a 1920’s flapper feel, only slightly twisted. I personally love it with the stockings, but you could cut back the goth without them.

Some Like It Cropped

Not since the era of Britney and Christina have crop tops been more popular – until now. It seems like no matter where you turn, there’s bare mid-drifts running about. While the look works great for summer barbeques and days at the beach, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable rockin’ it elsewhere (too drafty!). That is until I read this super easy tip from the ever-fabulous Blake Lively – just wear a shear lace bodysuit under it. Genius!

This one little inexpensive trick really gives this trend a longer shelf life. Just think about it: Ate too many sweets and not crazy about the idea of baring your belly in public? Didn’t spend enough time at the beach this summer and don’t want to blind anyone with your vampiress glow? Love crop tops but fear with fall around the corner, your fave fashion statement will need to be boxed up for a few months? Adding a lace bodysuit fixes all of these issues, plus I think it gives an outfit a sexy edge.

Day - This tee from Charlotte Russe couldn't be more appropriate for today (seeing it's Thursday and all). The black bodysuit paired with this would definitely make the lettering pop and would add some funky texture.

Night - A formal crop top? Who knew there was such a thing! This little number from Nasty Gal has a collared neckline and some fun cut outs on the sides.

Match Point - Your Guide to Matching Separates

Want to step up your game in the fashion department? You may have noticed a new trend popping up – matching separates. Celebrities like Rachel Bilson and Jennifer Lawrence have been rockin’ them on the red-carpet and you've probably also seen the look sashaying down the runways. These days, retail stores are stocking their hangers with all kinds of variations of this fashion statement. From the more subdued patterns, to the bold and beautiful, I bet there is an option out there for you!

Feeling a little scandalous? A high-waisted skirt and crop top might just become your go-to party ensemble!

If you’re petite like me, or are just on the conservative side,  you may want to stick to solid colors or classic black and white prints. This will keep you from looking like you are drowning in a sea of fabric. Not to mention, we don’t want you looking like grandma’s old ugly sofa!

Like to stand out in the crowd? Bright colorful patterns and bold prints will suit your style.

Still unsure this trend is for you? Pair your matching separates with a solid colored blazer in a complimentary color, to tone it down some. Or you can just wear your separates – separately! At least until you can muster the courage to don it from head-to-toe. With any outfit there are only two keys to wearing it well – confidence and great tailoring. Keep that in mind and go hit the mall!
